#Korg m1 software software#
It's very much a rompler, and as such there's little point owning one for 'the sound' when the software does it all anyway. Hope you understand what I mean, sure the hardware may sound a hint punchier/more 3D due to dirty convertors or what have you (well most hardware does because of running it in instead of all mushing up in the same box on the same card) but with M1 it was never 'awe inspiring' to start - maybe in the late 80s/early 90s. IT has better filters, all cards on board, and as we are talking 'bland digital' the sound differences really don't matter in the context of a mix. M1 is better imo than the hardware (not saying much). It's limited albeit a classic if that floats your boat. It's not really much of a synth to be honest, it's not deep (like SY77 is!) and you pretty much tweak sounds around rather than program brand new ones. I really didn't like the M1 I had (Keyboard version). (I have SY77 and DX7 IID and they sound better than FM8, even so FM8 is one of my favourite/most used soft synths for what it is). Just another view point from someone who kinda sorta likes the M1, but doens't hear or feel the need to sink in more cash for the 'real deal'. At least you'll be able to resell it at minimal loss if you do decide it was a bad decision. I am a huge Korg fan though Wavestation, NS5r, Trinity Rack, Triton, Karma, and MicroX have all graced my studio and have loved them all at one time or another. Quite honestly though, I'm happy with everything else in the Korg VSTi stable, with the M1 being my least favorite. I also don't feel the need to fill another rack space for the slight difference though, personally. I honestly don't think it's a convertor thing either. It's different on some presets and dead on on others. I've also heard back to back on hardware M1 and the VSTi as well. Then again, Phantom is only a four op FM synth, so it's not a 'remake' either. FM7/FM8 and a DX7 are both FM synths, but I've heard enough back to back conparisons, and they are not the same only one VSTi has captured that Yamaha FM 'vibe' that I've heard, and that's Phantom. I know this is the case with synths like FM8 vs a real DX and this probably comes down to the converters.Bad example, IMHO. The M1r has this classic airy Korg sound that really speaks to a specific time and vibe. That said, it's easier to tweak sounds on the Legacy Collection, but I had to admit to myself, when it comes to those sounds, I'm pretty much looking for THOSE sounds.

I can't tell you why the M1r sounds better, but it does. FWIW, I just picked up an M1r EX on eBay for just over $100, well worth it! Just want to know if I'd be making a wise choice in spending $350 to buy an M1 rack, or if the difference doesn't justify the purchase?įunny, I'm going through the same thing and asked myself the EXACT same question (also have the Legacy Collection). I know this is the case with synths like FM8 vs a real DX and this probably comes down to the converters. I Have the legacy collection which is awesome, bur feel like maybe I'm missing a bit of the magic that comes from owning the real deal. I'm really growing fond of the early 90's style sounds of synths like the KOrg m1.
